Confirmation is the sacrament when one receives the Holy Spirit. The minister of confirmation is a bishop or a priest with permission given by the bishop. To be confirmed, one must have been baptized. Confirmation is only received once because once it is received, it is permanent. Confirmation is a sign of consecration. It is an indelible mark on the soul and completes the baptismal graces. The recipient of confirmation, chooses one person to be their 'sponsor.' The person they choose must agree to help them learn and grow in their faith. They must be there if the recipient has any questions on their faith. I chose my brother. I chose him because I know he has a very vast knowledge on the church, going to a catholic school for 7 years and continuing to go to church every Sunday even with his busy work and college schedule. When receiving confirmation, the recipient must choose a saints name to have.My confirmation name was St. Margret Mary. I chose St. Margret Mary because her feast day was on my birthday, October 17. She was very devoted to her faith from a young age. She refused marriage because her mind was set on the Blessed Sacrament. Throughout her twenties she has revelations and visions of Christ. Seeing such a young person have such a strong faith, drew me into learning about this saint.
The form of confirmation is the bishop saying the words "Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit." While doing this, he will lay his hands on you and put the Holy Chrism in the sign of the cross on your forehead, which is the matter of confirmation. Once receiving confirmation, one receives the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. These gifts are: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, Fear of the Lord. These gifts were also received at Baptism. The following is information about receiving confirmation in my home parish, Maria Regina, the sacrament of confirmation is currently celebrated in the 8th Grade after two years of preparation. Please call the Religious Education Office (541-0921) for more information or to register your child.
