Baptism is the first sacrament given to anyone wanting to join the church. The form of baptism is "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." While doing this, the minister will either pour water over their head three times or submerge them three times into the water. The minister for baptism can be ANYONE, in case of an emergency. If not, baptism i usually celebrated by a priest or deacon during a special mass. After receiving baptism, all sins, original, venial and mortal will be forgiven. Another effect of baptism is that now all other sacraments can be received. this is why it is called the foundational sacrament. Baptism inducts you in the church and gives you grace. To receive , you must want to join the church, and promise to live life as the way Jesus told us to. If receiving baptism as a baby, their parents or god parents must promise to raise the child faithfully and help the child learn about the faith and receive other sacraments.
The matter is the pouring of water over the recipient of Baptism.
I was baptized on Novemeber 18th,2001. A month and a day after i was born. I was baptized late due to having to stay in the hospital due to serious health issues. At my home parish I was baptized in, Maria Regina, the sacrament is celebrated every Sunday at 1:30 PM (except for the months of December to March when it is celebrated every other week). Please contact the Parish Office (798-2415) for an appointment with a priest or deacon at least several weeks before the baptism. A Baptismal Welcoming Mass at 5:00 PM on Sunday followed by a special preparation meeting for the new parents is offered once a month. Please call the rectory for information. When receiving baptism, your parents choose two people t be your godparents. Typically this is a close family friend or a family member. They choose these two people because if anything were to happen to them, your godparents will help your faith grow and teach you about the faith.
